Intersections is a painted series of four irregular triangles bound by squares. My initial thought was to paint an exercise, not a series, of four triangle in a square but not made up of four matching equilateral triangles forming a square. My earliest explorations are calm in their relationships. The triangles share tight spaces without much struggle. Positive and negative spaces mostly keep to themselves. Small marks float or rest in open spaces.
As my interest grew in continuing with the series action picked up. Triangles warped, grew, and shrank. Activating lines and marks overlayed and pierced. My goal became to create agitation, pulling, pushing, spinning, closer to human activities than the original idea of four equilateral triangles forming a square.
When I had completed a few of these paintings, I realized I was painting a story of me as well as triangles. I have lived in many places, maybe thirty and have adapted to houses, apartments, dorms, living in a motel for a year, and over a garage for several months. Part of moving is leaving friends and developing new friendships. I've pushed, pulled, spun, overlayed, pierced, and grown, never fitting carefully in a square.
